What is an ADU?
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are small housing units built on an existing parcel. They can be legally rented out, and have their own address. Many property owners build these for housing for a family member, to rent to tenants, or to raise the value of their property. ADUs cannot be more than 1200 square feet, but most of them are about 750 square feet.
An ADU is practical for homeowners with family moving in, since they are a separate living space from the main house. From a practical standpoint, an ADU officially adds square footage, bedrooms and bathrooms to your parcel, and it can be covered by homeowner’s insurance.
ADUs are often compared to tiny homes, but an accessory dwelling unit has a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. Some ADUs are built as townhomes or with a loft, though many are one-story buildings.
